What Is Wilson Arch And Where Is It?

Wilson Arch is a sandstone arch in Utah.  Unlike most other arches you commonly see photos of or hear about it is not in a national park or national monument.  Wilson Arch is really easy to get to.  Wilson Arch is basically a roadside attraction about 26 miles south of Moab, Utah along highway 191.

There is a small parking area along highway 191 where you can pull off and take a very short hike to Wilson Arch.  Back in 2013 when this photo was taken Wilson Arch wasn’t much of an attraction.  There were a few people there from time time but not many people seemed to know it was there or cared to stop.  Now that Arches National Park requires reservations to get in during the summer, Wilson Arch may become more of an attraction among people who are not able to get into Arches and seek out other places to go.

What Is It Like To Travel To And View Wilson Arch?

If you go to Wilson Arch, chances are you’ll be on a road trip through Utah in the area of Moab.  Wilson Arch isn’t the major attraction you would plan a trip around.  If you are in the area of Moab, Utah or Blanding, Utah are to see the House On Fire or traveling between the two then you would pass right by Wilson Arch and might as well stop to see it. If you re staying in one of those towns a trip to Wilson Arch is an easy side trip. If you’re in Moab, you may want to drop down to the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park.  If you do, Wilson Arch will be on the way to the Needles District.

What Does It Take To Get A Wall Art Quality Photo Of Wilson Arch?

To get the best possible photo of Wilson Arch you’d probably want to be down there at sunrise or sunset.  At Wilson Arch you can climb around on the arch, climb through it and photograph it from most any perspective you’d like.  The area up around Moab with arches and Canyonlands has plenty of other spots that may great sunrise photos.  When you can get Mesa Arch sunrise photos, photograph Turret Arch through Window Arch at sunrise or even go to Corona Arch at sunrise, Wilson Arch may be pretty far down on your list if you have a limited amount of time.

When you do make it down to Wilson Arch, just look for a unique angle to shoot.  Since it will probably be less crowded than anything in the nearby national parks it should be easier to get photos without people in them.  Early morning would probably be the best time for that before traffic on Highway 191 picks up.

What Is The Best Gear For Photographing Wilson Arch?

When it comes to photographing Wilson Arch you’ll want a decent DSLR or mirrorless camera with a wide angle lens.  Most likely, the wider the better.  Chances are you’ll be photographing Wilson Arch while you are climbing on the sandstone that is or leads up to the Arch.  Since you’ll be so close to it you’ll want a lens that makes it so you can photograph as much of the arch as possible while standing so close to it.

When I was there, I didn’t yet have a panoramic photo setup and wasn’t looking for panoramic photo opportunities.  Wilson Arch may present an opportunity for a killer panoramic shot.  If you do have panoramic gear, Wilson Arch is so close to the parking area that it will be quite easy to go back to your car and grab it.

A tripod may come in handy if you will have to stand in an awkward position to photograph Wilson Arch.  A circular polarizer may help get a photo with nice deep blue skies.  It may also help make the arch a little more vibrant in your photos as well.

What Is The Story Behind This Wilson Arch Wall Art Photo?

In 2012 I took a massive, extended road trip through lots of the national parks in the western US.  I spent a lot of time in southern Utah and the Moab area in particular.  The primary attractions included Mesa Arch sunrise at Cayonlands National Park, Delicate Arch and the Windows section of Arches National Park, the House On Fire, Corona Arch and Natural Bridges National Monument.  Wilson Arch wasn’t even on the map until I discovered when driving on Highway 191 between Moab, Utah and Blanding, Utah.

The first couple times I drove by Wilson Arch I didn’t realize what it was and drove right by.  At the Lazy Lizard Hostel in Moab where I’d stay if I wasn’t sleeping in my car somewhere I asked about Wilson Arch and learned a little bit about it.  After talking to the folks there I decided it would be worth stopping there on the next drive by it along Highway 191.  I did go once at sunrise but it turned out to be a really nasty overcast kind of morning.  This photo was taken later in the say on another pass by it.
