What Is The Tantalus Mountain Range And Where Is It?
The Tantalus Mountain Range is part of the Canadian Coastal Mountain Range in Western Canada. It can be seen from the “Sea To Sky Highway” in western British Columbia that goes between the cities of Vancouver and Squamish, British Columbia. The Tantalus Mountain Range begins near the western edge of Squamish and stretches about 35km along the Squamish River. To see it you’ll need to road trip to Squamish, British Columbia or fly into a nearby airport like Seattle, Washington or Vancouver British Columbia and head up to Squamish. Vancouver, BC is an expensive, crowded but beautiful city. Squamish is much smaller, less crowded and full of amazing natural sights everywhere you look!
What Is It Like To Travel To The Tantalus Mountain Range Area In British Columbia?
Traveling to the area of British Columbia where the Tantalus Mountain range can be a pretty awesome trip. In February 2022 and for 5 or more years, the US Dollar has been quite strong compared to the Canadian Dollar. Even though Vancouver is a REALLY expensive city, if your native currency is the USD, that will ease the sticker shock a bit.
When you travel to Squamish from the US you’ll have to cross the Canadian Border. For whatever reason, the Canadian Border folks at Peace Arch (the land crossing between Washington State and Canada) are the nastiest people I’ve come across at any border crossing in any country anywhere. If you are going to drive across the Peace Arch border crossing, dress and look like a banker and not an outdoorsy type person. Make sure your car is nice and neat and doesn’t have gear scattered all over the place.
My experience flying into Vancouver was a ridiculous one too. They questioned me for an extended period of time and held me there until the last possible minute before the flight left. I’ve never been arrested or had a DUI and never had a problem at any border crossing anywhere in the past but for whatever reason the land and air crossings into Vancouver are ridiculous. Make sure you have printouts of hotel reservations, travel insurance and anything else you think they might want to see. Canadian border folks have always been super nice, super friendly and welcoming at every port of entry before and after the miserable experiences heading into Vancouver.
Assuming you get into Canada without any problems, you’ll need to get a rental car in Vancouver if you fly in. If you drive in you will, of course have your own car. Vancouver can be a cool place to spend some time but if you want to get away from it all, then get out of Vancouver and head up to Squamish. The Sea To Sky Highway is a really scenic road on the way up to Squamish. Once you get to Squamish there are plenty of lodging options from which to choose.
What Does It Take To Get A Wall Art Quality Photo The Tantalus Mountain Range?
In order to see the Tantalus Mountain Range, you’ll need to be up around Squamish, British Columbia. There are probably numerous places from which to view and photograph it. One such area is the Brohm Lake Trail as described here. I’ve not hiked that and this photo was taken from a different spot.
On this trip to Squamish, British Columbia I flew in, got a rental car and was fortunate enough to stay at the Tantalus Mountain Retreat. It’s basically THE most incredible cabin or vacation house I’ve ever stayed in. It is nestled up in the woods up on a hill. It’s off the grid and doesn’t require any hookups to the local power grid. It still has a hot tub and everything else you’d want in a vacation cabin.
In order to get stunning views of the Tantalus Mountain Range, just roll out of bed, walk out on the balcony with your camera and a long (400mm or so) lens and start shooting. It couldn’t be easier to get great shots of the Tantalus Mountain Range! If you want to get this particular shot, the only way to do it is to book the Tantalus Mountain Retreat. At $320 CAD and up per night, it’s not cheap but the views are incredible and the cabin is amazing! There is nothing like it!
What Is The Best Gear For Photographing The Tantalus Mountain Range?
If you make it up to the Tantalus Mountain Retreat for a stay or as a guest, you’ll want a DSLR or mirrorless camera and a lens in the 400mm range. You can probably hand hold it by resting it on the edge of the railing around the balcony but for some extra stability, a tripod could come in handy.
Panoramic shots could be possible here but it would take a serious (and likely very heavy) panoramic head in order to rotate a 400mm+ lens on a tripod. If you’re flying in, that might be a bit much.
What Is The Story Behind This Tantalus Mountain Black And White Wall Art Photo?
Back in 2014 I was lucky enough to be able to fill in for someone who wasn’t able to use a reservation they’d made with someone else at the Tantalus Mountain Retreat. It popped up out of the blue and I couldn’t resist going. At noted above, the cabin is absolutely incredible. The views are amazing, it is off the grid (though there might have been cel service) and the cabin is stunning. It’s an amazing place to stay.
The flight there was a bit of an adventure as the customs folks at the airport decided to give me a REALLY hard time. After about an hour of questioning, they did let me through with very little time to catch my flight.
We arrived at the Vancouver airport, got the rental car and I realized my drivers license was back at home. My travel partner had to do all the driving while in British Columbia and doing day trips from the Tantalus Mountain Retreat.
Once we got to the cabin, the views were immediately captivating. When not out hiking elsewhere, there was plenty of time to sit out on the deck, soak up the views and get some dramatic photos of the snow, ice and clouds on and around the Tantalus Mountain Range.

Matte prints tend to be best for areas with bright lights and lighting that is not diffused. Matte prints look good anywhere.
