What Is Bears Hump And Where Is It?

Bears Hump is a very steep but short hiking trail at Waterton Lakes National Park in southern Alberta, Canada.  This short but strenuous trail provides pretty awesome views overlooking the lakes and mountains of Waterton Lakes National Park as well as the Waterton Town Site right in the national park.

Waterton Lakes National Park is on the Canadian side of the International Peace Park that includes Waterton on the Canadian side and Glacier National Park on the US side in Northern Montana.  If you plan to go to Waterton Lakes National park, you’ll either need to take a road tip from somewhere in Canada or drive up through the western United States to the Chief Mountain border crossing in right near Babb, Montana.

What Is It Like To Travel To Bears Hump At Waterton Lakes National Park?

If you live in the US and you want to go to Waterton Lakes you’ll need to drive to get there.  If you are close enough or have enough time to take a road trip out there, that will likely be the easiest way to go.  If you are far enough away that you’ll need to fly most of the way, chances are you’ll want to fly into the Glacier Park International Airport and take a rental car from there.  Alternatively you can take Amtrak to East Glacier or Amtrak to West Glacier and rent a car from one of those train stops.

Once you get the rental car, the drive over to Bears Hump At Waterton Lakes will be about 180 miles from the Glacier Airport or about 100 miles from the East Glacier Amtrak station.  Since Waterton is an actual town within the national park, there is a variety of lodging.  The Waterton Prince of Whales Hotel is the most upscale lodging in the park.  There are numerous campgrounds in the park for the more budget minded traveler.  If you want to stay in the US, you can stay on the east side of Glacier National Park and do day trips across the border.

In order to go to Waterton Lakes from the US you’ll need a passport or passport card if you are visiting from the United States and driving across the border.  The Chief Mountain Border Crossing is a very small border crossing station and has some of the nicest and friendliest border and customs staff along the US/Canadian border.  It is only open for part of the year and is not open 24 hours a day.  Be sure to check the current operational hours before planning to pass through this border crossing.

Once you’ve got all the transportation and lodging taken care of, it will be a short drive to the Bears Hump trailhead parking lot from anywhere in Waterton Lakes National Park.  As noted earlier, the hike is short but steep.  With a little determination anyone can do it.  If you’re not int eh best of shape just take it slow and steady.  You’ll get there!

What Does It Take To Get A Wall Art Quality Photo From Bears Hump At Waterton Lakes National Park?

Due to the strenuous (but short) nature of the Waterton Bears Hump hike, the weight of camera gear on your back may be something to consider.  To get a good shot, you can hike up most any time.  To get a really good shot, sunrise or sunset might provide some really magical scenes but I’ve only hiked it during midday.

What Is The Best Gear For Photographing Sunrise From Bears Hump At Waterton Lakes National Park?

As you can see from the photo featured in this post, the view from Bears Hump is a panoramic view.  You can get some cool photos with a regular DSLR or mirrorless camera.  In order to really capture the full scene you’ll want to have a camera that shoots panoramic shots in the camera or you’ll want to bring a tripod with a panoramic head that you can use to shoot photos to stitch together.

What Is The Story Behind This Bears Hump Panoramic Wall Art Photo?

This panoramic Wall art print of Bears Hump was taken back in 2015 on a trip primarily to Glacier National Park in Montana.  It has been an extended road trip through many US National Parks throughout the earlier part of the year.  At this point, the Many Glacier Campground still had first come first served campsites.  As long as you got there early in the morning, there was no need for a reservation.

After spending a few days wandering around Glacier, we decided to get an early start and head over to Waterton Lakes National Park.  The border crossing went smoothly and we got to Waterton soon after the border crossing opened for the day.  After exploring the visitor center and enjoying a drive around Waterton, we decided to do the hike up.

The day was hot, the sun was bright.  We grabbed lots of water.  I grabbed a ton of camera gear.  That included a full frame Canon DSLR, a few lenses, a tripod and the Nodal Ninja panoramic head.  Upon reaching the top, it was clear that this was definitely a panoramic scene.  I didn’t bother to take any single shots and instead took all pano shots from up there.
